Barbies

That morning at breakfast, Ashley noticed that her sister was quiet, unusual for Dawn. "You okay?" she asked, concerned.

Dawn looked up from her juice. "Huh? Oh yeah. I'm fine," she yawned.

Ashley laughed. "Must have been some party. What time did you end up getting home?"

Dawn yawned again. "I'm not sure."

Her sister smiled. "Did you meet any cute guys?"

Dawn tensed. Should I tell her about meeting Taylor? Or should I just say no? Instead she shrugged. "I don't know. I did meet this one guy that was sorta cool."

Ashley pulled a chair out from under the table and sat down, propping her head on her hands. "Details."

Dawn swallowed thickly then took a sip from her glass.

Sitting back, Ashley crossed her arms over her chest. "Well...?"

"Well, he's really cute. He's got blue eyes, and about five-seven. And he has blonde hair."

Ashley thought a moment, trying to figure out who she knew that fit her sisters description. But couldn't think of anyone. "What's his name?"

Um, she thought. She tried to appear to Ashley as if she were trying to think of his name. Then she shook her head. "I can't remember." "

"Uh huh. Sure, Dawn." Ashley said sarcastically, rolling her eyes.

"I can't!" she laughed nervously.

"Whatever," Ashley said, doing the "W" sign with her hands.

Dawn laughed again. "C'mon. Let's go. We're going to be late for school."

Taylor and Isaac sat on the couch in the Hanson house, working on a math assignment. Tay was working on square roots, but he couldn't concentrate. Visions of Dawn kept floating around in his head like a whirlpool.

"Hello? Tay? Earth to Taylor!"

Taylor shook his head. "Oh sorry. What?"

Isaac was starring at him with an odd expression on his face, as if he were an alien from ID4 or something. "I was talking to you and you weren't listening."

"Sorry Ike, I was just thinking about something."

Isaac smiled. "Something ... or someone?"

Taylor felt the blood rush to his face. "Well..."

"Oh, Taylor come off it. You and I both know you have the hots for that girl you were dancing with last night. What's her name? Ashley?"

Taylor shook his head again. "Nah, that's her middle name. Her real name is Dawn."

"Oh cool. She's pretty." Isaac paused. "You know, if it doesn't work out between you two, you can always let me have her," he said, smiling an evil grin.

Taylor looked at his brother, his mouth opened. "Ike, she's thirteen. She's too young for you."

Ike shrugged. "She's only like three and a half years younger than me. Not much of a difference"

"There's a big difference between thirteen and sixteen...they're like dog years." Taylor mumbled.

Isaac laughed. "Chill Tay. I'm not going to go after your little girlfriend," he got off the couch and walked towards the kitchen doorway. "Unless things don't work out between me and Michelle," he grinned then left the room.

Taylor tossed his math text book on the couch beside him. He leaned back and ran his fingers through his blonde hair and shut his eyes,

Just then, his little sister Avery came into the room carrying a Barbie Doll. "Tay?"

"Huh?"

"Um..." she started shyly. "Will you play Barbies with me?"

Taylor sat up and looked at his little sister, eyes wide. "I'd really love to, Avie, but I'm...working on my math, yeah, and I have a headache."

A look of hurt briefly passed over her little face, but then brightened. "Well, can I brush your hair?"

Taylor sighed. "Why don't you ask Jessica? Or Zac?"

"Already did. They both said no. And Ikey-poohs said he was leaving to go to some girls house. And mommy and daddy said they were too busy. And Mackie said..."

"Avery, I don't..." he stopped when he noticed Avery's bottom lip began to quiver.

"Okay. Okay! You can brush my hair."

Avery smiled. "Kay! Be right back!" and ran out of the room insearch of a brush.
